It’s October………………Happy Friday!
I am very excited about the Fall weather, The Fiddler’s Convention, and Fall Break coming up (not exactly in that order).
I had great reports from K students, teachers and parents today from their field trip to Lyon’s Family Farms but part of the report was that it actually got cold! That is a definite sign that Fall Weather has arrived…..pumpkin patch trips on a cool autumn day. Thank you K teachers for taking your students on a fun-filled day to the pumpkin patch. I know the parents appreciated it and the students loved it.
Library Changes (see email)
Starting Monday (10/5/15):
- Students can check out books anytime
- Students can take AR tests anytime
- No more than 2 students at a time from your classroom
- Remind students to be quiet when coming into the library
Mrs. Chenoweth and I have been working together concerning a few library procedures. We really want to make sure the library is accessible to all students - all the time. We also want to encourage students to read, enjoy reading and encourage students to take AR tests. Taking more AR tests will hopefully help students build their comprehension skills. I think these changes will be positive changes for our students and our school. This will start on Monday.
Extra plan time - a working lunch :)
I have been in discussion with several teachers lately concerning extra plan time during lunch. I have approved the following:
If you would like to develop a "lunch-partner teacher" - Teacher A can carry Teacher B's students to the lunchroom and give Teacher B a working lunch plan time.
You can alternate days or maybe alternate weeks.
I know 1st grade has an odd # of classrooms but I am sure we can make it work with a partnership of 3 somehow. 1st grade - I will talk to you later today if you think you would want to do this as well.
Lighthouse Team
Our Lighthouse Team met today and we discussed the following:
- Leadership Day in Nov (week of American Education Week) and we will be planning an event here at CES and something for the Events Center Celebration with other LC schools.
- Parent lighthouse team discussion - I am working on this with a group of parents.
- Student lighthouse team discussion - I am working on this with 5th grade students
- Discussion concerning purchasing LiMe materials for this year - no decision was made. Please discuss this among your grade levels.
- We discussed plans to engage our school more in the LiMe process. We all know this is a busy start to the school year but we would like to see us move forward with positive momentum with our LiMe process. We welcome input here.
New Logo - for the past 2-3 weeks we have been kicking the idea of developing a new logo for CES. Through some deliberation we have started liking this logo which is just a simple shield w/ a banner at the bottom.
We are going to give it a trial run on our Boosterthon Shirt to see how everyone likes it.
So far feedback from several staff, parents, and students have all been positive. Your feedback is welcome.
Boosterthon - starts soon!
Pep Rally Kick-off - Oct 20th - 1:00 (K, 1, 2) & 1:40 (3, 4, 5)
Fun Run - Oct 29th - 830 (K, 1) & 930 (2, 3,) & 1030 (4, 5)
Parent Advisory Team - Each month I meet with a Parent Advisory Team. We mainly meet on the last Friday of each month in my office. We discussed - building project, south side lot plans, school goals this year (attendance, discipline, chief awards, math and reading goals, boosterthon, supper w/ Santa, Q & A time).
A positive brought out that I want to commend everyone on - communication! Parents all feel we are doing a better job communicating with them. Keep up the great work here - remind app, emails, blogs, class dojo, newsletters, phone calls and face-to-face meetings.
(They did not know I was going to take a team pic this past week and a couple really didn't want this pic published). :)
October Birthdays!
Building Project Update
Unfortunately we did not have the meeting this week with the BoE and architects to open the bids for our building project. The State Department is still working on approving some final stages of our plans. Thanks for your patience and prayers. :)
Report Card / Grades - Please refer to Mr. Taylor’s email sent on 10/1 (which Mary Beth sent before she left to go out on maternity leave.
ASU College of Education observers & student teachers
This week we placed 8 ASU College of Education observers and we already have 1 student teacher placed here at CES. It's always great to be a "teaching" school. Every teacher in our building has something to offer to aspiring teachers. I really want to thank you for inviting observers into your classrooms.
Move Your Bus - so how's it going reading Ron Clark's Move Your Bus?
I know in many ways it has been a challenging start to this school year....but in many ways it has also been the best start to a school year and I can't wait to see what the rest of the year has in store for us.
Ch 16 - Change the conversation to change the culture. This chapter contains one of my favorite pages - p. 90:
